To unlock King Dedede, Meta Knight, Bandana Waddle Dee, Rick & Kine & Coo, Marx and Gooey you must first beat the story mode to unlock the Ultimate Choice mode, then clear it on any difficulty.
This will allow you to choose these new characters in future attempts. You must also do the same for Guest star for them to be playable in that mode.
